When it comes to predicting how good a show is going to be, Rolling Quartz fans don’t need to “roll the dice”.

On July 17, Korean rock band Rolling Quartz hit Logan Square Auditorium as part of their MY TURN US Tour. The 250-capacity venue was perfect for their small and dedicated fanbase, Diadem, who showed up ready to support them.

The performance venues on this tour lean smaller and more intimate, and this auditorium was no different. On top of that, without an opening act to warm up the crowd, the concert ended up being a tight 90 minutes. Doors opened at 6:30 pm with a 7:00 pm start time, and the set ended a little after 8:30 pm.

Kicking off the set with “RE.BOLD”, Rolling Quartz gave off the same garage band energy they’ve had since their 2020 debut. This isn’t to say they’ve experienced no growth, but that they still project a sincere joy and love of playing that keeps their performance engaging. While they have the craft, skill and stage presence of musicians twice their age, their energy still scream, “We’re just happy to be here, let’s rock!”

Speaking of that 2020 debut, “Blaze” is still a setlist mainstay that never fails to get crowds jumping and fists pumping. The packed auditorium bounced to “Delight” and reveled in “Rock’n’roll Paradise”. There were also solo spotlights for each of the members: a drum solo from Yeongeun, guitar solos from Iree and Hyunjung and a bass solo from Arem. “Azalea”, “Stand Up” “ONE” and “Masquerade” also made the setlist.

Between melting faces with fan-favorite tracks like “Roll the Dice” and “Fearless”, the members took time to connect with their fans, known as Diadem. Iree took time to painstakingly explain the distance traveled to spend time with Chicago fans: 7,109 miles, along with the six hours spent in a van, to be exact. The members each took a turns expressing their love and gratitude to fans for coming out to see them.

As much as I adore their original songs, the covers are always a wonderful addition. While previous concerts like the one I attended in 2023 included covers of Blackpink’s “Pink Venom” and Paramore’s “Misery Business”, among others, the primary cover at this show was Queen’s immortal classic “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Even the band themselves admitted onstage they were nervous to tackle given how difficult and iconic the song is. Thing is, there was nothing to be nervous about. Not only do they have two guitarists who were more than prepared to tackle Brian May’s head banging solos, but Jayoung’s vocal range and tone fit the song perfectly. If they hadn’t already proven their mettle as rock stars in their own right, this absolutely solidified it.

With an encore of “Romantist”, a soaring ballad dedicated explicitly to Diadem, they closed out another heartfelt set. Waving the Korean, Chicago and United States flags before taking a photo with the crowd, they threw out guitar picks and high fives before ending the show and giving fans time to grab merch before the VIP perks began. These kicked off at 9:00 pm, but anyone who didn’t pay extra for selfies with the group and other goodies watched the sun set on another perfect evening as they made their way home.

Even if you didn’t get more than general admission, this show was worth every beautiful second. The packed room was energetic from the moment the band made their way towards the stage, and they maintained that energy throughout the 90 minute set.

Rolling Quartz MY TURN US TOUR will continue through October and still has several cities to go. Each one, for sure, will turn every venue of any size into a “Rock’n’roll Paradise”.
